General Purpose
The Assistant Cheer Coach is responsible for assisting the head coach in the recruiting of athletes, teaching proper technique, the safety of the athletes, as well as character development of the cheer team members at Ogden High. Oversee all planning and preparation. Development of good sportsmanship, practice/work ethic, and positive attitude on and off the court/field for team members and coaches. Responsible for all necessary paperwork, meetings, adherence to district and state policies/procedures, and attending all practices and games/performances. Responsible for coordinating cheer program schemes and philosophies with feeder programs. All other duties as assigned.
Assistant Coaches must show competency in the following:
- Proven experience in teaching and modeling character and responsible behavior.
- Positive, high energy, and committed to the program.
- Partners well with parents, staff, community leaders, etc.
- View success not just as winning, but as helping team members to reach goals.
Major Areas of Responsibility:
- Coordinate the training, instruction, conditioning, and selection of athletes at all levels within the program.
- Follows and meets all expectations set forth by Ogden School District regarding the position of an assistant coach.
- Communicates with head coach regarding team questions and concerns.
- Develops and organizes effective practices for athletes that teach skills needed to compete in our conference.
- Supervises athletes and teams assigned to him/her and assumes supervising control over all athletes in the program when such control is needed.
- Demonstrates and generates among your staff and players an attitude of good sportsmanship and fair play.
- Adheres to the start and end dates of the season and rules pertaining to out of season coaching as determined by the UHSAA.
- Provides for the health, safety, and well-being of team members at practices, contests, and transportation to and from games. This includes oversight of the locker room if applicable.
- Promotes a proper relationship with athletes and parents.
- Secures all doors, windows, locks, and checks lights before leaving any area used.
- Works within the basic framework and philosophy of the head coach.
- Helps in planning and implementation of both in-season and out-of-season conditioning and weight programs.
- Avoids criticizing, admonishing, or arguing with the head coach or any staff member within ears and eyes of players and parents.
- Assist head coach with the distribution and collection of equipment on a timely basis, informing athletes of their responsibility for the use and return of athletic equipment/uniforms. It is the coach’s responsibility to collect all equipment/uniforms that has been issued.
- Assists in arranging for a postseason gathering and inform the Athletics Department of certificates needed.
- Completes a post season report with necessary information as stated by Athletics Director and head coach.
- Actively recruits at the Junior High School and High School level, the students within their boundaries.
- Maintains a positive image on the school’s athletic websites and social media.
- Keeps the school’s athletics website current with rosters, schedules, and score updates.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Athletics Director.
Education and Experience
- A High School Diploma or equivalent is required
- Coaching experience at a middle or high school level. Experience could also be extensive work with developmental programs.
- NFHS coaching certificate is preferred
- Good Basic knowledge of the sport is preferred
